Kayla Collymore is a 21-year-old dancer from New Jersey trained in ballet, modern, jazz, hip hop, and African dance. Q: What got you into dancing?
A: Well, I was told that when I was a toddler I enjoy rolling around on the ground, twirling in circles, and kicking my legs in the air…even when I was in a fancy little dress. My mom decided to put some training and discipline behind that and joined me in a local dance studio. Since that first ballet class I was forever stuck in this lifestyle.
Q: Who is your dancing icon/role model?
A: Desmond Richardson.
Q: Would you ever tour with a musician as a back-up dancer?
A: IN A HEARTBEAT!…(hey Beyonce!)
Q: Name your best and worst dance moments.
A: Best dance moment was when I performed a duet with one of the most phenomenal male dancers in my university’s department and literally wept on stage as I danced. After the show I came to find out that everyone in the audience was crying as well, I felt completely vulnerable and satisfied that I finally reached a stage in my dancing that I’ve been working towards my entire life, which is sharing every aspect of my soul with an audience and reciprocating the same emotion. Worst dance moment was at an audition when I crash landed a jump on my bum right in front of the judges’ table.
Q: 3 things you won’t leave home without?
A: My planner, water bottle, and my confidence.
