We love any opportunity to learn more about artists in our community, especially those who have received such great opportunities via our Creative Invites. This time we were able to ask Yadira Rodriguez, one winner of Paul Taylor’s Dance Invite, some questions about how winning has affected her life.
TH: What does it mean to you to have been selected for this opportunity?
Yadira: Honestly, I still can’t believe it. It was something totally unexpected. I have been searching for an opportunity, something that could take me closer to what I really want… But I never imagined that it could be a scholarship to learn from one of the most important choreographers, Taylor, and the opportunity to dance in NY!
TH: Do you usually participate in contests, or is this your first time?
Yadira: It’s the first time that I participate in an event of this kind. When I was in the conservatory, every year we celebrated a Choreographic Contest from Andalucía where participants voluntarily presented their own choreography, and students from other conservatories help the winners with cash prizes, so they could continue with their training in dance. I participated in this contest five times, and got the first prize four times.
TH: Now that you have been awarded with this scholarship, have your plans changed in regards to your career as a dancer?
Yadira: To be honest, my plans have not changed at all. All of the contrary, they are now stronger than ever. Currently I’m auditioning everywhere possible. My goal is the same, to attend a Dance Company, dance for as long as possible so when I finish my career as a professional dancer, I can teach contemporary dance and pass onto my students all my knowledge and years of experience. I can say that my short-term goals have changed. My plan for the summer was to work to save money for future auditions. Now I have to find a job and some kind of scholarship to help my family and me cover other expenses in NY, travel and accommodation, in order to enjoy this incredible opportunity offered by Paul Taylor.
TH: Do you have any kind of advice for other artists and for the Talenthouse Community?
Yadira: To artists I would say to never stop being who they are, artists! This profession is very difficult, and even when it gives us much happiness y great moments of joy, along the way we also encounter ups and downs and disappointments, but never abandon the goal even when the path seems dark. Because with hope, perseverance, and working hard in a smart way, everything is possible! The most important is to have a clear image of what you really want and to go for it because it will come when you least expect it! So I send you with much love lots of patience, encouragement, and a big hug to everyone!
