The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum is set to launch Grateful Dead: The Long, Strange Trip in April, an exhibit that will chronicle the band’s 30-year odyssey.

The Hall of Fame’s Director of Curatorial Affairs, Howard Kramer said:

The band gave their full blessing to the project. They allowed me unfettered access to their warehouse and offered up items from their personal collection, which is how you want to process this work.”

Five Jerry Garcia guitars, Mickey Hart’s custom-painted drum kit, and artifacts from the band’s sound designer Owsley “Bear” Stanley are among the artifacts visitors will find in the exhibit. Handwritten lyrics to songs including “Box of Rain,” “Truckin’,” and “Sugaree” will also be on display. Kramer called the handwritten manuscripts “stunning.”

The artifacts are to be presented in a non-linear manner. The exhibit is unique in that the focus will not only be on the band, but on their Deadhead fanbase as well. Kramer remarked, “The story of the Grateful Dead is as much about the people around them as it is about the band themselves.”

The exhibit will open April 12, two days before the Rock Hall’s annual induction ceremony. Guns N’Roses, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Beastie Boys are among this year’s inductees.  The Long, Strange Trip runs through December, giving fans the majority of 2012 to visit.
