With the deadline for Fashion Week Las Vegas submission just around the corner, we have decided to give our participants and other designers a dose of inspiration by taking the time to get to know one of our participants, Justin Jamison.
Justin is an emerging San Francisco menswear designer who has worked hard to get himself known in the San Francisco fashion scene. In 2011, he was nominated Best Male Designer for the San Francisco Fashion Awards. His designs were also featured in the July/August 2011 issue of Essential Homme Magazine. In the fall of 2012, his Spring Summer 2013 collection was also showcased at Union Square’s Maidenlane event and at Macy’s Fashion’s Night Out.
Photos above are from Justin’s spectacular Fall Winter (FW) 2013 collection. The negative and positive space, color blocking, and simplistic and minimal lines shown from this collection were inspired by artist, Richard Serra.
His designs offer the same kind of silhouettes that men are used to, but he adds a signature twist by playing with design lines. His jackets are also very unisex; they’d look great on both men and women.
Justin studied Fashion Design at the Art Institute in San Francisco where he graduated as an honor student and received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Fashion Design. He spent his first two years at the Art Institute focusing on the basic foundation of women’s wear.
During his junior and senior year, he was given the opportunity to focus on what he’s truly passionate about, menswear. He then worked on mini-collections where he had the chance to showcase them at the student annual show his junior and senior year.
After graduation, he studied the arts and foundation of fashion in Paris where he got a chance to work with up and coming designers who were working for Terry Meebler and Dior. They taught him a lot of European techniques and to think outside the box instead of focusing more towards the mass market. After returning from Paris, he developed his brand and launched his Spring Summer 2013 collection last August.
Keep pushing and going for what you want. It takes time to get where you want to be, so don’t give up.
Justin plans to stay in San Francisco and extend his business in the future by designing shoes, belts, and other accessories after he fully establishes his apparel line.
If you like what you see, support Justin. His latest collection can also be seen at the Unite SF Fashion Show at the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California. Click here for more details.
